I’m Migrating! See You Over at IndieGames.com

Dry your eyes, my child. This is not the end. It is merely… the beginning

OK enough with the storybook talk. I was contacted by the chairman of the IGF a couple of days ago and asked if I’d move over to IndieGames.com and write for them instead. I clearly jumped on the idea, because I’m a big, fat sellout.

No! I’m not a sellout. You see, I set up Independently Speaking because I wanted to spread news of indie games which aren’t getting as much coverage as they should to as wide an audience as possible. While IS definitely spread the word a little, IndieGames attracts a rather larger amount of traffic and therefore the chances of spreading ANYTHING are just slightly higher.

So if you’ve been an avid IS fan, now is the time to migrate with me (although the majority of you most likely already read IndieGames) – I’ll be posting everyday on the IndieGames Blog. Have no fear, readers, I will continue to post exactly how I have been – just in a different place.

As for Independently Speaking, I’m not 100% sure what to do with it yet, but I’m considering keeping it as my own personal blog so I can track all the goings on in my indiegame-driven life.

See you on the other side.

A New Dawn: Moved to Independently-Speaking.com

3 02 2009

newdawn

Independently Speaking has moved! Well… kinda.

While Independently-Speaking.com used to redirect wuh-wuh-wuh surfers to the WordPress blog of the same name, Independently-Speaking.com is now the main site itself, with all site material available straight from there.

Have no fear! All links aimed at the WordPress blog will still get to their destinations un-harmed, while the RSS feed still works perfectly fine too! (even though I predicted that it wouldn’t)

So hail to the new, slicker site setup! But don’t you go worrying your little tooties there, mister – it’s still the exact same site, just with a cooler address.

Did I seriously just say ‘tooties’…

Moving Over to Independently-Speaking.com Tomorrow

2 02 2009

is_logo.jpg

You may have noticed that, while the actual address for this site is independentlyspeaking.wordpress.com, the link www.independently-speaking.com will redirect you here also.

Sometime tomorrow, however, there’s going to be a bit of a change. A swap, if you will. www.independently-speaking.com will become the main site and independentlyspeaking.wordpress.com will begin redirecting there. I decided that Independently Speaking needs a proper site address and so, from tomorrow, it will!

Of course, moving the whole site is going to cause problems – RSS feed will probably stop working, previous links from other sites will become dead… but I’d rather get the move done sooner rather than later.

So don’t forget to add the new site address to your favourites/sign up to the new RSS feed!

You may also note that this is my 100th post since IS began. Hurrah!

is_jan09

That’s right, folks, it’s time for the Jan09 indie game roundup!

I’ve been bringing you the latest independent gaming news for one whole month now and I’ve enjoyed every second – hopefully you have too. Of course, I’d love to know what exactly you guys like and don’t like about what I’m doing. Is there anything you’d like to see more of? Less of? Drop me a comment and I’ll listen to what you have to say.

So… onto the Jan09 news! Here’s the main topics that littered the indie headlines this month:gravitybone

Indeed, January was a rather busy month in the indie gaming world. Again, if you have any comments about the work I’m doing, whether it be good or bad, please feel free to leave me a comment – I’d love to hear from you.

Bring on February!

Independently Speaking – An Introduction

6 01 2009

I’ve been pretty obsessed with gaming for a while now. Like so many twenty-something year olds, gaming offers a means to escape from the bustle of ‘RL’ and explore some pretty incredible worlds. Games have evolved into a wonderful media phenomenon that I’m extremely glad I am taking part in.

While the gaming industry itself is booming (officially beating DVDs and CDs in terms of sales in 2008 for the first time ever), the independent gaming scene has trundled along un-noticed for the most part. Of course, now and again an independent developer has sprung up with a release that has blown minds, but they were few and far between.

And yet I have still always been fascinated with the whole scene. As always, Wikipedia best explains what is meant by an independent video game:

Independent video game development is the process of creating video games without the financial support of a video game publisher.

While it sounds like such a risky strategy, it clearly leaves developers to make their own game, their own way.

And now it would appear that all that risk is paying off. 2008 saw indie games climbing from the back seat into the passenger’s place and now independent developers are popping up all over the place.

WOG

Meet World of Goo. Chances are you already have. Created by independent developers 2D Boy (who consist of 2, yes 2 guys) and released in 2008, it was deemed so utterly brilliant that it managed to pick up a nice few GOTY awards, beating off the likes of Grand Theft Auto 4, Super Smash Bros Brawl and Guitar Hero: World Tour – all titles that were developed by teams consisting of many more than 2 members, all which years and years of experience in making hit titles.

So is the power of the independent developer, and as they say, things can only get better. Enter Independently Speaking. My love for indie games has led me to this point. My name is Michael Rose and I am a senior editor over at Steamfriends. I’m also an editor on Gameconnect Magazine.

My stints on both these gaming sites have led me more deeply into the world of independent gaming – especially Steamfriends, since the Steam platform gives so much support to indie developers. Steam is the perfect medium for independent producers to deal out their goods to the world and the scene owes a lot to it.

Independently Speaking will be my attempt to follow the independent scene through every future twist and turn and keep both you and myself up-to-date with all the ‘goss’ from the up-rising world of indie.

I hope you enjoy the ride.
